Tamilnadu Amateur Rowing Association

New Rowing Centre at Sri Ramachandra University, Porur

The 15th of August 2015 will see the birth of another rowing centre in the city of Chennai - the SRASSC Water Sports Centre (SWSC). Although it is named to cover any suitable water sport, at the moment it will essentially be a rowing centre. Already in place is an adequately large boathouse and a full fleet of new racing craft is on its way from Hyderabad. The water body is an artificially created fresh water lake that permits aquatic life. Finally the rowers of Chennai will be able to row, within the city, on some clean water, rather than the muck and the slush that we have been used to for so many years.

The rowing centre, incidentally, is part of a much larger project of the Ramachandra University namely, the Sri Ramachandra Arthroscopy and Sports Science Centre (SRASSC). This Sports Science Centre is easily one of the finest in Asia, equipped with state-of-the-art machines, equipment and facilities and has already helped several Indian and foreign athletes enhance their performances. The rowers can now take advantage of this facility too. Aptly, their caption reads; Nurturing sports… through science.

The man behind all this is Dr. Sivaraman Arumugam, somebody who took to rowing just four years back. He developed a passion for the sport and that has resulted in this centre - a gift from him for the rowing lovers. Also working closely with the doctor to ensure that the rowing facility became a reality were people like Mr. Balaji Maradapa and Mr. Manoj Joseph, besides many others.

Tamilnadu Amateur Rowing Association (TARA) is proud of the facility and would work closely with the centre to promote the sport further in the city.
